LSU's Music Collection at Middleton Library
First and foremost, several of our members have highly recommended the musical score stacks at LSU's Middleton library. There is so much music there, and browsing the stacks is a wonderful adventure for every musician.

|
Craig, Phebe and Frances Blaker The Discontinuo and the Pre-Discontinuo These are play-along books for recorder players. Frances Blaker wrote performance
notes that are helpful and interesting. Some of the music will be familiar. It's fun to hear other musician's
interpretations. It's
also fun to play recorder with Frances Blaker.

Donington, Robert The Interpretation of Early Music Overall
general reference book, lots of information on playing Baroque Music,
and also covers Renaissance music

|
|

|
Green, Barry with Timothy Gallway The Inner Game of Music On
the surface, a bit of a cheesy "self help" style book, but it contains
great practical advice and tips on gaining confidence in your music
making (i.e. not putting self down and obsessing over each mistake,
etc.), intonation, ensemble playing, phrasing and improved technique
through goal oriented practice. Again, a book that helped me and I
highly recommend it to others.

|
Monkemeyer, Helmut Handleitung Fur Das Spiel Der Alt-Blockflote The text is all in German, but the music is delightful. There are quite demanding exercises for learning to play alto up. This book is very helpful and inspiring, especially since this is a beginner's book in Germany!

|
Quants, Johann Joachim Essay of a Method for Playing the
Transverse Flute Written in 1752. Although intended for flutists,
pretty much everything he says (except for chapters on flute
embouchure, fingering, etc.) can be used by recorder players, excellent
advice on musicianship, articulation, "taking breath", etc. This is a
book I keep going back to over and over again.

|

|
Spanhove, Bart The Finishing Touch of Ensemble Playing great
ensemble tips, exercises, and suggestions for intonation, tuning
suggestions, listening to each other, keeping together, music as
language, articulation, phrasing, dynamics, etc. He also includes lists
of recommended consort repertoire. Being a member of the Flanders
Recorder Quartet, he is an expert on the topic of ensemble playing and
in selecting beautiful repertoire.

Stewart, M. Dee, editor Arnold Jacobs: The Legacy of a Master A
collecton of articles and lectures by and about Arnold Jacobs who was a
tuba player and professor. He was also known as an outstanding teacher
of breathing technique for wind instruments. Very useful information
about breathing and blowing - this book was actually highly recommended
to by Eva Legene. (recorder virtuosa and professor at Indiana
University) It is another book that I keep coming back to.

Wollitz, Kenneth The Recorder Book an invaluable resource for all recorder players. Topics covered include technique (breath, articulation, fingering, and
vibrato), practicing, ornamentation (trills, mordents, and appoggiatura
"grace notes"), ensemble playing, selecting and caring for a recorder,
